Things to do in Riyadh during Summer

Things to do in Riyadh during Summer
The Saudi summer is long and HOT! If you find yourself "stuck" in the Magic Kingdom for the summer, you are likely looking for activities to pass the time. Especially since school is out and kids are at home, families are desperate to do on the lookout for things to do in Riyadh. One of my personal favorite areas in Riyadh is the diplomatic area, often referred to as "DQ".

The DQ was originally built around the entire embassy staff and diplomats accommodate, but nowadays anyone there live in one of the many residential areas. The DQ is so big, it's almost like a small town right next to Riyadh. The diplomatic quarter can be easily reached from the city center in 10 minutes after Ouroba about to end. Once you're inside, it feels like a normal neighborhood anywhere in the world, lush and green and peaceful. You forget that you are in Riyadh, and it's like a refreshing change from the concrete jungle. Check out this post for more information on the diplomatic quarter of parks and gardens.

In general, anyone can enter the dq and the parks are in public areas. When asked, many Saudis will remember the weekend of her childhood spent playing and picnicking in the diplomatic district parks. In the 90s, these parks and gardens were very popular among the DQ Riyadhians was the place to be during the weekend. But the rules tightened much after the terrorist attacks ten years ago. The National Guard, which are known to protect the entrance quirky and sometimes illogical (racist in other words) who they let in or not. There are no residential passports and sometimes for residents of certain nations are having a hard time at the gate added to.

If you come on weekday mornings, you could say you are visiting the embassy, and they should let you in. There are many companies and businesses that have their offices in the dq, why not combine errands done in the quarter with a walk in the park afterwards. Unfortunately, like most of the compounds in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi and Arab citizens have problems entering, especially on weekend evenings. In general, the more is "Western" you look like, and if you speak English, the easier entry will be.

The best thing imho for women abayas that are not needed and that allows us to enjoy physical activities outdoors in summer. When entering the diplomatic quarter of circle 1, there is an info point shortly after on the right side with two large maps of the area.
